| Filters for use on warship flight decks face a different set of requirements to those used in aircraft cockpits. Sometimes full compatibility is essential, while at other times a balance must be achieved between retaining visibility to NVG equipped aircrew while not interfering with their NVGs (NVG Friendly). Often the filters must not affect the colour of the light source, or reduce intensity excessively. At the same time they must work in the most hostile of environments - vibration, salt atmosphere, extremes of temperature, often close to very hot light sources or directly under the jetwash from VSTOL aircraft, and with the mechanical shock of aircraft or helicopters landing. The compatibility requirements are defined in the UK by Def Stan 02-587 Part 3, drafted for MoD by Consolite. Consolite has developed a range of rugged glass filters to meet these requirements, suitable for retrofit to existing light sources, and proven over a number of years service on warship flight decks for the UK RN and other navies around the world in all environments. Consolite has also developed filters for fluorescent lamps. The full range of sizes - T5, T8, T12 - can be accommodated, providing compatibility for either white or green illumination. Installation is simple as they fit over the tube without modification to the existing luminaire. In areas such as the Bridge and Flyco instruments often need to be filtered for full compatibility, and here aircraft cockpit technology does apply. Consolite can supply the full range and can advise on suitable choices and techniques. |
